Every week here at Ilex brings a beautiful bevy of fresh cut flowers. It’s still exciting each time to open up the boxes of some of the finest fresh flowers shipped in from all over the world. Other times the beauty is right outside our doors. This week we want to bring special attention to the Nikko Blue Hydrangea.

We love supporting local Tennessee growers. This particular variety of flower is farm grown and raised in the awe inspiring Smokey Mountains of East Tennessee. Macrophylla is the species name of this bountiful bloom and, very appropriately, signifies “big leaf.” The Nikko Blue Hydrangea grows to be 4–6 ft tall with a similar spread. These flower clusters usually appear in early to middle June. They are of course gorgeous in fresh arrangements, but can also be harvested to enjoy for longer periods of time with dried arrangements as well.
